The beginning of a new year is a particularly inauspicious time to begin a new blog. In keeping with this tradition, it is customary for a first post to announce what sort of writing readers may look forward to, and to reaffirm the author’s intent to provide regular updates.

I have no such intent. My plan is to consolidate bits of thought that I often find myself communicating, but posts are unlikely to be regular. As for the subject(s), I expect this blog to mostly contain a collection of some of my favourite rants and ramblings about how great/terrible/interesting certain things are, interspersed with the occasional practical or scientific post.

I will avoid christening a blog that may well die in infancy, but if it did have a name, that name would be “ph6” (which is due to Sam Clarke). Like the chemical scale,¹ the precise meaning of this name is more interesting left unexplained, and is not especially important anyway.
